Summary
The Women Fitness Cycle (WFC) is a 24-month project focused on investigating the impact of the menstrual cycle on women’s engagement in physical activity, with the ultimate goal of identifying and overcoming barriers related to menstrual cycle symptoms. The initiative aims to enhance menstrual health literacy within the sport sector by conducting comprehensive research, including a systematic review of existing literature and additional studies.
The project is committed to developing two practical tools: an educational online course and a mobile application. The educational program is designed for sport coaches and trainers to raise awareness and normalise conversations around menstruation, enabling them to better understand and manage the effects of the menstrual cycle on female athletes. The specialised app will serve as a cycle tracking tool for female athletes and practitioners, offering personalised recommendations for physical activity based on reported symptoms, with the intent of facilitating consistent adherence to Health Enhancing Physical Activity (HEPA). This project contributes to the Erasmus+ priorities of promoting HEPA and advancing gender equality by addressing women’s unique physiological needs in sport, while also supporting digital transformation through the creation of a specialized fitness app.
